Shipping and International Trade - Market Update

The recent trading boom was accompanied by a downturn in shipping litigation, which is not altogether surprising. Who's going to bother fighting over small claims when they are benefitting from hugely increased profits? The slow decline in litigation was clearly offset by the sharp peak in finance and shipbuilding contractual work. The tide has, however, now clearly turned.

Shipping contracts entered into at the peak of the boom are now in distress as the shipping industry is facing the combined effect of market contraction and the credit crisis. This is still good news for shipping lawyers, however, as contracts are re-negotiated and potentially contentious issues come to light. A number of our private practice clients are seeking to add depth to their departments in London, Europe and Asia.

Key locations include Hamburg, Piraeus, Hong Kong and Singapore. Language skills are useful, but not essential. There are also currently opportunities in-house. We have experience of recruiting at all levels, so if you are contemplating a move, please feel free to contact my colleagues or myself at a time convenient to you.
